How to choose the perfect box? Think inside the box!

The boxes in which you deliver your product may seem like an extra, but the presentation of your company should never be taken for granted. Poor quality packaging will keep your business looking cheap, and boxes that don't protect your precious products properly can lead to disputes about refunds and negative reviews from disappointed customers.

Most popular transport packaging

Cardboard boxes are still the most popular way to put anything that doesn't fit in an envelope. Despite the tremendous advancements in materials knowledge, there is nothing that rival corrugated boxes in convenience and sturdiness at a realistic price. They are incredibly easy to use. And by using recycled material, you can boost your green ambitions. A critical consideration for some consumers.

The internet makes it possible to browse the box world well before making your choice. However, without sufficient prior knowledge, it is difficult to assess the differences and prices for the correct value. Because we are not a producer but a packaging trader, we can often advise you better than the producer himself (who would of course prefer to sell his own product). VIZ is independent and has a broader view of more producers and alternative options. The goal is to provide you with the right box packaging for the best price.

What should be in it?

Choosing the box you need takes the necessary care. You need to consider the size of your product, the amount of support it needs and how delicate it is. Sending air is something you have to pay for, so the better it fits, the less you pay in wasted shipping. For boxes on pallets, it is recommended to consider a modular box. these box sizes are adapted to pallet sizes so that stacking can be optimal and effective.

Cardboard boxes come in a wide variety of sizes, your choices largely depend on how the box is assembled, the Fefco model, and the number of corrugated layers that make up the walls. The most commonly used Fefco model is 0201, the American folding box.

Number of layers of corrugated cardboard

Single-wave cardboard boxes are the traditional favorite. They are inexpensive, easy to use and light. However, they don't support heavy products (asking for samples is always a good idea when you enter the packaging industry) and double-walled boxes also provide an extra level of protection for delicate products. Packaging experts tend to follow the rule that if a product should only be 'held together' rather than protected, then single-walled should be perfectly suitable. They stack perfectly while loaded with light objects. They are very versatile and come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.

Double-wave boxes add an extra layer of protection and strength to your packaging. They cost a little more than single-walled boxes and generally have a 'wall' of about 7mm around your product.

The extra layer of corrugated cardboard makes the boxes more rigid and more resistant to damage. If your product is easily damaged or weighs a lot, you should consider a double-walled box. They don't noticeably weigh more than single-walled boxes, so don't add too much to your shipping costs. Double-walled boxes last longer, so if you use them for storage, you'll have to use them multiple times. They can be easily stacked with sufficient load capacity to handle heavy objects. They come in a similar range of sizes to single wall boxes.

Triple-wall or tri-wall corrugated board is also used in extreme situations or very large boxes.

Wall thickness and flute (wave)

The picture shows the differences in wave types. This thickness of the wave is indicated by a letter. Namely E is about 1.5mm thick, B stands for 3mm and C for 4mm thickness. In addition to this thickness, boxes can also consist of various layers of cardboard. For example, the BC and BE combinations are usually used for standard double-walled boxes. E-wave or E-flute is usually used for small shipping boxes.

Testliner or kraftliner

Optionally, your box or corrugated cardboard is made from fully recycled or partly recycled paper / cellulose. The inside of the box is almost always made from recycled paper. The outer layer is optional. Testliner means that the outer layer is also made of recycled paper. Kraftliner means that the outer layer is made of new paper (usually called FSC). Because the fibers on testliner are shorter, this cardboard is slightly less sturdy and less moisture resistant than kraft. You can recognize kraftliner by the smoother surface. The color is also slightly darker. Tape usually adheres better to kraft liner cardboard.

Custom-made boxes

If there is no suitable size for your product within the range, we can have it custom made for you. Usually we assume a standard Fefco model that may be used. is expanded with extra recesses, grooves and / or flaps. When dimensioning, take into account possible. protective material around your product. The dimensions always concern the internal dimensions. Printing is of course possible. different printing processes, each with their own possibilities and limitations. Usually 2-color printing in flexo printing is chosen. Color photos are usually produced in offset or digital print.

Closing boxes

Remember that a cardboard box - as versatile as it is - is very rarely a complete solution. Take into account the way of closing. A box can be wholly or partly self-closing due to the folding method and / or adhesive strips. This is already very common for E-commerce shipping boxes, but packaging tape, staples or glue are of course the most used in production warehouses. Often as part of an automatic packaging line. At VIZ you can order all these articles, together with your boxes. In most cases this saves costs.
